Otama School realizes the importance of numeracy within the Maths curriculum and therefore emphasizes this aspect across the school. From the junior class right through to the senior room the basic number facts and strategies are taught through a range of challenging and age appropriate techniques.
Reading & Writing
Reading and writing are the foundation
stones upon which future learning can be built. At Otama school
our small class sizes allow teachers to zero in on this area of
the curriculum and provide our students with the best possible start
to their learning journey.
The school has a wide range of reading/writing resources and a well stocked library from which the children are able to access books, for both pleasure and study.
Small groups
Research has shown that children learn best on a one to one basis and in small group situations. At Otama we offer a low student-teacher ratio.
Integrated Learning
We believe that learning is not strictly limited to paper and books. Therefore all of our programmes operate in a dynamic and integrated fashion, incorporating social contexts and all areas of the national curriculum.
Physical Education and Sport
Children have regular daily Physical Education programmes. All children are expected to take part. Otama School participates in various inter-school sports activities in the region including activities like swimming, T-ball, cricket, rugby, cross-country and athletics. The school has its own tennis court, fitness circuit and covered pool.
Outdoor Education
Our senior school camp offers the children a chance to experience a broad range of activities depending on the camp location, such as; yachting, kayaking, tramping, fishing, gold panning - and loads more. Otama has its own bus service, which allows us the freedom to access a range of out-of-school activities.
The Arts
We understand that the arts (dance, drama, music and visual arts) impact strongly on how children view their world. At Otama school, children's creativity is nurtured and encouraged.
Information Technology
We are most fortunate to have a very high pupil:machine ratio.
There is one computer for every five pupils. Few schools anywhere can hope to match that.
All of our computers are linked to the Internet.
We have a fax, a scanner and a digital camera. These resources are freely available to the pupils and they allow the children to create and publish their work independently.
